Rossen Gergov was born in 1981 in Bulgaria. At the age of five he began to play the piano and six years later won the first prize in "Concorso di Musica per i Giovanni - Città di Stresa" in Italy. His fine musical talents soon broadened to include the clarinet and composition, but he found his true passion in conducting. In 1996 he began his conducting studies with Michail Angelov. Already in the following year he won the special prize for "Conductor of the New Generation" at the "Young Musical Talents" competition in Sofia. At the age of 18 he began his studies in the conducting class of Leopold Hager at the University of Music in Vienna. Two years later his exceptional talent was recognised by Seiji Ozawa. The Maestro invited him to the Tanglewood Music Festival -where Gergov received a conducting scholarship from the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In the following years Rossen became assistant and pupil of Seiji Ozawa. In 2004 Gergov was awarded a distinction at the conclusion of his conducting studies, where he conducted the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra -in the Musikverein, Vienna. He was named an assistant-conductor of the Tonkünstler Orchestra, Vienna shortly after - a position he held until 2009. Rossen Gergov is Laureate of the First International Conducting Competition "Evgeny Svetlanov", which was organized with the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg- in May 2007. He has recorded works by the American composer David Chesky with the Symphony Orchestra of Norrlands Opera, Sweden. This recording was nominated for a 2008 "Grammy" Award in the category of "Classical Contemporary Composition". Gergov recorded also for the BBC, the Bavarian Radio and the ORF- (Austria). Gergov has a rich experience in the field of opera. At the age of 21 he was already working as a "Repetiteur with conducting duties" at the Theatre of Meiningen, Germany. In summer 2007 he made his acclaimed debut at the Bregenz Festival, conducting the contemporary opera "Playing Away" by Benedict Mason, with the Tonkünstler Orchestra, Vienna. In summer 2008 he was invited back to the renowned festival to conduct "Tosca" with the Vienna Symphony Orchesta. In October 2008 he conducted the world premiere of the chamber opera "Prinz, Held und Füchsin" ("Prince, Hero and Vixen") by Akos Banlaky in Vienna. In February 2009 he conducted the Czech premiere of Michael Jarrell's monodrama "Cassandra" at the Brno National Theatre. In June 2010 he will give his debut at the Volksoper Vienna- with "Fledermaus". Among other orchestras, Gergov has had the pleasure of working with: Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, Basel Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Century Orchestra, Osaka, Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, Graz Philharmonic Orchestra, Gunma Symphony Orchestra (Japan), Jena Philharmonic Orchestra (Germany), Symphony Orchestra of Norrlands Opera (Sweden), Tyrolean Symphony Orchestra Innsbruck, Tonkünstler Orchestra, Vienna, Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. In this season Gergov will return to Japan to conduct the Kanawaga Philharmonic Orchestra, the Kyoto Symphony Orchestra, the Kyushu Symphony Orchestra, Century Orchestra, Osaka and the Sapporo Symphony Orchestra. Further engagements include appearances with the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra and Tonkünstler Orchestra, Vienna. In this summer, he will conduct the opening concert of the Bregenz Festival- with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra (broadcasted Live in TV) and he will also conduct the Austrian premiere of the opera "The portrait" by Mieczylsaw Weinberg with the Vorarlberg Symphony Orchestra. In the 2010/2011 season Gergov will give his opera debut in England at the Opera North. Rossen Gergov has a very broad repertoire with interests ranging from the music of the Vienna Classics, through the romantic period and onto the contemporary music. |
